Most dog trainers will tell you the same thing: shorter names work better. One or two syllables, ending in a vowel sound, are easiest for dogs to recognize. "Bella" registers faster than "Bartholomew" — no matter how much Bartholomew fits the energy.
That said, plenty of dogs answer to long names just fine, especially when there's a natural nickname built in. Zeus becomes Z. Magnolia becomes Maggie. The name you use every day matters more than the name on the paperwork.

Dogs respond faster to short, punchy sounds. Names ending in a vowel (Bella, Milo, Koda) are especially easy for them to pick up.
